2A Gallery presents an exhibition of work by Orien Lowell Greenough running through February 15, 2015. A  reception takes place on Sunday, February 15, 2015, 6–9PM. The gallery will have extended hours on March 1, from 9AM till 5PM. The gallery is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9AM till 12PM.

The exhibition consists of paintings and drawings by Greenough depicting the horrors of what he perceived as social injustice, particularly involving racism and relating to the various wars America was involved in after World War II.

Orien Lowell Greenough (1921–2008) was a visionary artist and committed antiwar activist. While serving in the United States Coast Guard between 1940 and 1944, his experiences led him to become a conscientious objector. On the strength of his convictions he went AWOL but eventually turned himself in to the authorities. He was incarcerated for a year in a military prison, where he met and was counseled by a Quaker volunteer. During this period he came to understand the nature of his pacifism, which became his lifelong commitment. After the war, Lowell entered art school and for several years studied under Emil Bisttram, the noted teacher and artist of the Southwestern United States.

It was during the 1950s that Lowell became more involved with antiwar activities – marching, protesting, and campaigning against the violence of war. This led him to begin painting and drawing about his antiwar and anti-racist convictions. The work in Orien Lowell Greenough: Lives Matter reflects his personal views on the prevalent violence and social injustice of the period. The works, which span from the mid-50s to the mid-60s, showcase Lowell’s later magical realist style of painting – similar to other noted artists from the era such as Ivan Albright and Irving Norman. Three strong works in the exhibition, Metamorphosis of Edward TellerBuried In Uniform, and The Klansmen are all prime examples from this period. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to appreciate the prescient nature of Lowell’s antiwar art, an artform that has become commonplace in today’s culture.

2A Gallery is pleased to present Fireside Lounge to 41.296111, -105.515000, a solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Julie Shafer. The images in Fireside Lounge to 41.296111, -105.515000 were created while driving the same path taken by two men in Laramie, Wyoming who kidnapped and murdered Matthew Shepard. The men enticed Shepard, an openly gay man, to follow them outside the Fireside Lounge where he was kidnapped, taken to a deer post five miles away, tied up, beaten, and left to die. He was found alive but unconscious the next morning by a cyclist who described his body as looking more like a scarecrow than a human. Matthew Shepard died in the hospital six days later.

In an attempt to create images that evoke unseen, silenced, and distorted histories, Shafer drove from the Fireside Lounge to the deer-post, photographing as she drove. Each photograph’s exposure lasted the duration of the drive, either from the lounge to the post or from the post back to the lounge.

The photos are arranged so viewers first encounter emptiness, then two images, each created through a single exposure, lasting the duration of the drive from the lounge to the deer post and back.

Using specialized processes, Julie Shafer creates photographic images that evoke the presence of unrepresented individuals and histories. She has investigated themes of race, gender, and queer politics. Her work subverts the legacy of the idealized landscape through processes that allow a give-and-take with the land, examining the tension between real and imagined borders while focusing on socio-political, geological, current and historical applications of photography.

Julie Shafer is an artist living and working in Los Angeles. Her work has been shown throughout Southern California, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Most notably she has shown at the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, CA, the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery at Barnsdall Art Park, The Luckman Fine Arts Gallery at CSULA, at the Kellogg Museum at CSU Pomona. At the end of 2013 she presented a lecture on her project Conquest of the Vertical for a TEDx conference. This lecture is available on-line through the TED conference YouTube channel. She received her B.A. from UC Irvine, and her M.F.A. from USC.

2A Gallery is pleased to announce Ines Kivimakiʼs site-specific installation, Point De Capiton. Literally translating, as “upholstery button” in French, Point De Capiton is also a term used by 20th century psychoanalyst, Jacques Lacan, to translate the provisional conclusions and make-believe anchoring points that loosely predicate larger ideological systems. Kivimaki questions the authenticity of todayʼs online “user experience”, drawing a paradox between the experiences we recognize and trust to be real, and the artificial interactions we surmise to articulate as experience.

This body of work is interested in the Internetʼs totalized point of view on information as an infinite source of freedom with unlimited access and endless communication, facilitated by specific corporate aesthetics, often involving images of the night sky and outer-space as signifiers for the unlimited and the sublime. In this case, through a highly choreographed Internet surf session, a tactile piece of moon estate and a living screensaver. A meta-narrative around illusions of freedom and control is proposed through a poignant investigation of perpetual archive, iconography of interfaces and appropriated corporate visuals.

An exploration of space, literally and metaphorically, Point De Capiton fastens links between high-tech fetishism, New Age utopianism and the dream of land tenure and ownership, revealing points where seemingly disparate ideologies overlap.

Ines Kivimaki (b. 1990) was born in Paris, France and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Kivimaki received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Art Center College of Design in 2014. Her work has been included in exhibitions at Roberts & Tilton, Culver City, CA; Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA; SOSM Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; Arkadia Gallery, Helsinki, Finland.

2A Gallery & The Framatic Company presents and exhibition of works by Suzanne Adelman & Keith Walsh during this year’s 9th Annual Frogtown Artwalk.

Los Angeles wife and husband artists Suzanne Adelman and Keith Walsh individually explore representational conceptions of spaces and time. Using digital media Adelman strategically shifts one’s expectations of a unified pictorial space, time, and content of a photographed subject, or through a layering of visual elements from different photographed environments into one image. Walsh presents collages that are conceptual constructions of the abstract dynamism of outer space, and an abstract sculpture representing the dynamism of a controversial media icon.

Suzanne Adelman received her MFA degree from Cal Arts. Her photographic light boxes commissioned through Metro Art are on view at Los Angeles Union Station through 2015. Recent solo or group exhibitions include Weekend, West LA College, S1F, LA Mart, and Beacon Arts Building, and ForYourArt. Her work has been reviewed by the LA Times, LA Weekly, THE Magazine, The Huffington Post, Artweek, and Photograph Magazine.

Keith Walsh received his MFA degree from Tufts University. Recent solo or group exhibitions include Weekend, For Your Art, The Eagle Rock Shop, LA Mart, the Beacon Arts Building, and The Santa Monica Museum of Art. His work has been reviewed in Artforum, Artweek, The LA Weekly, and The LA Times.

Frogtown Artwalk is a yearly free tour of the studios of the artists and artisans of Elysian Valley (Frogtown). “A Forest.” The Cure. Seventeen Seconds. Fiction Records, 1980. LP.

2A Gallery is very pleased to present a group exhibition of photo-based work by Cathy Akers, Annie Buckley, Anita Bunn, and Siri Kaur entitled A Forest, opening Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 6–9PM and running through June 8, 2014. This exhibition takes into consideration work by contemporary artists who employ images of trees and/or forests with a special significance. The exhibition title refers to the 1980 song A Forest by The Cure, with an additional nod to the seminal 1989 MOCA, LA exhibition A Forest Of Signs: Art in the Crisis of Representation curated by Ann Goldstein.

Ms. Goldstein’s exhibition presented photo-based works by a younger generation of artists who challenged the veracity of “a forest of signs” being broadcast in a new print media and television-saturated world. An unprecedented number of female artists were included in the exhibition – 12 out of 30 – including Dara Birnbaum, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, and Cindy Sherman, all of whom continue to influence a new generation of artists investigating the meaning of representation.

The works presented in A Forest include images of trees that function as varying types of representations. In Cathy Akers’ Pee Performance series, she documents performances that take place in sites that have generally been the purview of male artists. In Pregnancy Pee the image is of a woman marking her territory – literally – in the woods. The women in the Pee Performance photographs are simultaneously vulnerable and powerful, exposed but sheltered by their own self-possession, by their intense subjectivity while performing the act of peeing.

Annie Buckley’s works are photo-montaged hybrids of the female figure with trees. The figure can be read as being/becoming a part of nature, but the figures’ branches reaching up toward an unseen sky are also elegantly ornamental and decorative. Inspired as much by her desire to challenge historic depictions of women as by the increased urgency of recognizing our interdependence with nature, these hybridized characters are neither fully human nor fully botanical. The figures blend the surreal quality of daydreams and meditation with the impact of individuality.

Anita Bunn presents a series of images of trees standing silently in their urban environment. In View From My Window the trees become ominous characters acting as sentinels, beneath the unnatural glow of city street lights. In contrast to the straightforward approach of Judy Fiskin, Bunn’s images are rich with color and dark emotion. Acknowledging the complex history of image making, the title of this series references Nicéphore Niépce’s 1826 work View from the Window at Le Gras, which is considered to be the earliest photo-process image.

Siri Kaur’s diverse body of work ranges from cosmic abstractions to purely narrative compositions. In Forest House it may initially appear that the house in the center of the composition – a lone structure silhouetted in the dusk light of a waning sun – is the subject of the photograph. The trees in the foreground, however, act as a screen through which the viewer must gaze. Kaur’s photographs act as mimetic cinematic screens themselves, examining the narrative power of photographic representation. The viewer is invited to construct a story about the unseen residents of the house and its place in the forest.

Cathy Akers received her MFA from California Institute of the Arts in 2006 and her BFA from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1996. Her multidiscipline practice spans photography, painting, sculpture, and installation. Her work has been exhibited at Honor Fraser Gallery, Emma Gray HQ, and the Manual Archives in Los Angeles, as well as venues in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Israel and the U.K. She received an Artists’ Resource for Completion (ARC) grant from the Durfee Foundation in 2007 and a Travel Fellowship from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2012. She exhibit the complete Pee Performance series in Brussels in fall 2015 and in Wroclaw, Poland in January 2016. She lives and works in Los Angeles.

Annie Buckley, an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and professor, received her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2003 and a BA with academic honors from UC Berkeley in 1990. Her art and writing are informed by her longtime practices of meditation and yoga and an exploration of the intersections between ancient Indian and contemporary postmodern philosophies. Her critical writing has been published by Artforum, The Huffington Post, Art in America, Artillery, and several other publications. Her work has been included in solo exhibitions at Carl Berg Gallery and Jancar Gallery, and was the subject of a large exhibition entitled Human Nature at Los Angeles International Airport, which was sponsored by the LA Department of Cultural Affairs. She was recently in the group show Tapping the Third Realm at the Ben Maltz Gallery at Otis College of Art and Design and Laband Art Gallery at Loyola Marymount University.

Anita Bunn received her MFA in Photography from Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, CA in 2007 and her BFA in Photography with honors from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA in 1990. She has had several solo exhibitions at Offramp Gallery and regularly participates in group exhibitions and with local artist-run spaces. She has shown her work both nationally and internationally, and is in many public and private collections, including the Wallace Annenberg Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Capital Group, Los Angeles.

Siri Kaur received her MFA in Photography from California Institute of the Arts in 2007, an MA in Italian Studies in 2001, and BA in Comparative Literature in 1998 from Smith College. Kaur was the recipient of the Portland Museum of Art’s Biennial Purchase Prize in 2011. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at Blythe Projects and USC’s 3001 galleries in Los Angeles, and group shows at the Torrance Museum of Art, California Institute of Technology, and UCLA’s Wight Biennial. Her work has been reviewed in Artforumart ltd., The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, and was included in the 2013 California Triennial of Photography at the Museum of Photographic Arts, UC Riverside. She lives and works in Los Angeles, where she also serves as Associate Professor at Otis College of Art and Design.
